Condoms & Sexual Health

Condoms are the key to worry-free, safe sex. It doesn’t matter if you’re in a relationship or single, condoms protect against everything from STDs (sexually transmitted diseases) to unwanted pregnancy. When used correctly, condoms are 98% effective meaning that only 2 out of every 100 women get pregnant when their partner uses a condom. Even if the condom is used incorrectly, only 18 out of 100 women get pregnant, which aren’t terrible odds. Although pregnancy isn’t a concern when using sex toys, if you’re sharing with other people (or using them both vaginally and anally), condoms can help keep your toys clean and prevent the unwanted spread of bodily fluids (and other things).

Females can wear condoms too. Although they work a little differently, they’re still 95% effective at preventing pregnancy. They’re worn inside the vagina and act as a barrier against sperm reaching the eggs. While female condoms do protect against some STDs, they’re not quite as effective as the male variety.

Condoms are one of the oldest forms of contraception and it’s no surprise why. When used correctly, they work! Plus, they’re relatively inexpensive and come in a variety of sizes, textures, and materials. Some condoms are even flavored to make oral sex more pleasurable.

No two penises are the same, either, which is why Romantic Depot offers a range of sizes and designs to choose from.

The History of Condoms

Believe it or not, the first report of anything resembling a condom dates back to the 1600s. During the reign of Charles I, a device was extracted from a castle in England that mildly resembled a traditional condom. Back then, condoms were made of silk, animal tissues, or oiled linen. In 1920, latex was created and the world of condoms changes forever. Fast forward to today and condoms come in a variety of materials, each with its own unique features including ultra-thin for a barely-there feeling, texture or ribbed for her pleasure, and lubricated for easy entry.

Types of Condoms

Lubricated, and textured, and flavored, oh my! Condoms come in so many styles, materials, and designs it can be difficult to choose. Let our guide help.

Materials

Although most condoms come in Latex, there are other materials available including lambskin and plastic. These are ideal for anyone with a latex allergy. Plastic condoms, also known as polyurethane or polyisoprene, protect against STDs during not only vaginal sex but anal and oral also. Lambskin condoms are made from lamb intestines and have tiny holes in them, which leave you more susceptible to STDs.

If pregnancy is your concern, you can also invest in spermicide condoms which are coated with a lubricant that kills sperm. Some people take things one step further and use sperm-killing products just be careful because some could irritate your genitals.

Lubricated

Need a little extra lube during sex? Lubricated condoms take the guesswork out of getting warmed up and ready for some fun. (Speaking of warm, warming condoms are another tantalizing option). Lubricated condoms have a thin layer of lube on the exterior that makes sex more comfortable for both partners. If you plan on using your own lubrication, make sure it’s water-based. Other varieties can damage the condom and stop it from working correctly.

Textured

Lube isn’t the only thing that can make sex with a condom more enjoyable. Textured condoms have ribbing and studs along the outside to increase pleasure for her. Some actually boost pleasure for the guy, too.

Flavored

Flavored condoms are a popular choice for a fun and delicious night of sex. Romantic Depot has flavors for every taste including strawberry, grape, and Cola. Can’t decide? Try Durex’s Tropical variety pack. We also have delicious edible condoms for a playful twist on traditional sex and foreplay. Just remember, they won’t protect against pregnancy or STD’s
